Public open house scheduled on options for extending Link light rail to Northgate

Options for routes and station locations for the potential extension of Sound Transit's Link light rail from the University District to the Northgate Transit Center will be discussed at an open house being jointly sponsored by City of Seattle and Sound Transit. Sound Transit representatives will present the latest information for this portion of the Central Link light rail system, and City of Seattle representatives will kick off the planning process for the area around the stations. Station area planning focuses on the types of development the community would like to see within a five-minute walk of each station, about a quarter-mile.

Sound Move, the 10-year regional transit plan approved by the region's voters in 1996 called for Sound Transit to extend its Central Link light rail project from the University of Washington to the Northgate area if funds should become available. A major effort is underway to secure the necessary funding. Sound Transit and the City of Seattle are moving ahead with planning for the extension and for the areas around potential stations in the Roosevelt and Northgate communities. The city's station area planning efforts are building on the recent neighborhood planning process and using light rail station development to create even better communities by planning for desired development, public spaces, attractive streetscapes and other amenities. Construction is planned to begin on the Central Link light rail line between the University District and SeaTac next year.
