Celebrating Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month is a chance to honor the rich histories, diverse cultures, and contributions of AANHPI communities.
It’s also the perfect time to shine a spotlight on the trailblazers who’ve shaped our nation across art, science, politics, activism, and so much more.
But it’s not just about looking back — this month is also about reflecting on the challenges AANHPI communities have faced and continue to overcome. It’s a moment to build awareness, foster unity, and strengthen our shared understanding of the values that make our society more inclusive and compassionate.
If you’re interested in learning more about AANHPI Heritage Month, there are a number of exhibits you can check out in our region:
- The Wing Luke Museum is running its walking tours on heritage trails on May 10 and May 17.
- The Yuan Ru Art Center in Bellevue will be featuring Sàigòn to Seattle: Our Past, Our Present, and Our Future, featuring work from artists who showcase the resiliency of the Vietnamese spirit for viewing until May 17.
- “Ai, Rebel: The Art and Activism of Ai Weiwei” at Seattle Art Museum through Sept. 7, 2025, highlights the artistic strategies of Ai Weiwei’s 40-year career for questioning forms of power. It marks the artist’s first U.S. retrospective in over a decade and his largest-ever U.S. exhibition.
- Viet Thanh Nguyen with Shawn Wong at Seattle Public Library on Wednesday, May 7: Pulitzer Prize-winning author Viet Thanh Nguyen will discuss his new book, “To Save and to Destroy,” with fellow author and scholar Shawn Wong.
- SAM Talks: Asia Society Seattle Series on Thursday, May 15: Explore the intersections of art and music in conversation with celebrated visual artist Zheng Chongbin and Asian Hall of Fame musician Daniel Pak.
Last but not least, let’s not forget the delicious part! AANHPI Heritage Month is a feast for the senses, celebrating the incredible variety of culinary traditions these cultures bring to the table. Food has this amazing way of connecting us — it tells stories, carries memories, and keeps traditions alive.
