A perfect day in Edmonds: Waterfront views, local shops, and transit-friendly fun

Publish Date

Looking for a relaxing day trip in the Puget Sound region? Downtown Edmonds offers waterfront views, independent shops, community gathering spaces, and a walkable downtown—all easily accessible by transit.

Whether you arrive by Sounder, Community Transit, or the Edmonds-Kingston ferry, you'll find plenty to explore just steps from your stop. Here's how to spend a day enjoying one of the Puget Sound region's most charming waterfront communities.

Start with coffee and a stroll

Begin your visit at Walnut Street Coffee, known for its cozy atmosphere and welcoming neighborhood feel. Grab a coffee and pastry before making your way toward Main Street and then to the water.

One of the best things about Edmonds is how walkable it is. As you head downhill, you'll pass local businesses, public art, and tree-lined streets that invite you to slow down and explore.

Take in the Edmonds waterfront

A visit to Edmonds isn't complete without spending time along the waterfront.

Located just steps from the ferry terminal and Sounder station, the Edmonds waterfront offers sweeping views of Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains. Watch ferries come and go, stroll along the shoreline, or simply find a bench and enjoy the scenery.

The waterfront is also a reminder of how connected Edmonds is to the rest of the region. Trains, buses, ferries, and walking paths all converge here, making it one of the most accessible destinations in Snohomish County.

Browse books and community spaces

From the waterfront, head into downtown and stop by Edmonds Bookshop. This independent bookstore has been a community fixture for more than 50 years and is the perfect place to discover your next great read. Browse the shelves, pick up a gift, or check out the staff recommendations.

Just a few blocks away, the Edmonds Library offers another welcoming community space. With comfortable reading areas, public programs, and plenty of natural light, it's a great place to pause and recharge before continuing your day. (And its rooftop is incredible).

Discover local creativity

Music lovers won't want to miss Musicology, an independent record store filled with new and used vinyl, music memorabilia, and carefully curated finds.

Like many of the businesses that line downtown Edmonds, Musicology reflects the city's creative spirit. Even if you're not a collector, it's worth stepping inside to browse and discover something unexpected.

Edmonds also hosts some classic summer events, from PorchFest to outdoor movie nights to a seasonal summer market held on Saturdays.

Catch a movie downtown

As evening approaches, make your way to The Edmonds Theater, one of downtown's most recognizable landmarks.

The historic theater has welcomed moviegoers for generations and remains a popular gathering place for locals and visitors alike. Its classic marquee and central location make it an easy addition to any day spent exploring downtown.

End the day like a local

Before heading home, stop by Daphnes, located next door to the theater. The intimate neighborhood spot has become a favorite gathering place for residents and visitors looking to relax and connect after a day of exploring.

Then it's just a short walk back to the Sounder station, ferry terminal, or nearby bus stops.

Getting there

One of the best parts about visiting Edmonds is how easy it is to leave the car at home. Sounder's N Line provides rail service directly to downtown Edmonds, Community Transit buses connect the city to destinations throughout Snohomish County, and Washington State Ferries links Edmonds with Kingston on the Kitsap Peninsula.

Whether you're looking for waterfront views, local businesses, or a slower pace for the day, Edmonds proves that some of the region's best adventures begin with transit.
