Public invited to meet Sound Transit's contractor and learn about design and construction activities as well as weigh in on station names

Publish Date

Sound Transit will hold two open houses this month on upcoming construction of the extension of regional light rail from Angle Lake to the Federal Way Transit Center that will open in 2024. The 7.8-mile extension will have three new stations near Kent/Des Moines Road, South 272nd Street and Interstate 5 and the Federal Way Transit Center.

In-person open houses are taking place at the following locations:

  • Kent/Des Moines, Wednesday, Nov. 13, 6-8 p.m.
    Highline College, 2400 S. 240th St., Building 8
  • Federal Way, Wednesday, Nov. 20, 6-8 p.m.
Federal Way Performing Arts Center, 31510 Pete Von Reichbauer Way S.

Members of the public are invited to meet representatives from Kiewit Infrastructure West Company and Sound Transit to discuss design progress for the new light rail line and stations; view conceptual images of the stations; learn about construction schedule and impacts; provide input on station names; and learn how to stay informed and involved during construction.

For those unable to attend in person, there will be an online open house available from Nov. 13 to Dec. 13, including an opportunity to weigh in on station names. Sound Transit's Board of Directors will select the station names in early 2020. The online open house will be available at www.FederalWayLink.org.

The in-person open house will have interpreters available in Spanish, Somali, Russian, Korean and Vietnamese. The online open house will include information translated into these languages.

By 2021 Sound Transit will expand light rail to the U District, Roosevelt and Northgate. In 2023 trains will reach Mercer Island, Bellevue and the Overlake area. In addition to the Federal Way Link Extension, 2024 will bring the opening of extensions to Shoreline, Mountlake Terrace, Lynnwood and downtown Redmond. From there, continuing expansions will focus on Tacoma, West Seattle, Ballard, Everett, South Kirkland, Issaquah and Tacoma Community College, forming a 116-mile regional system by 2041.
