Construction in Hilltop and the Stadium District during the week of August 12

In Hilltop, crews will do stormwater work at the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Way and S. 13th Street as well as the intersection of MLK Jr. Way and S. 18th Street. The contractor continues to install Link power poles on Martin Luther King Jr. Way from S. 13th Street to S. 15th Street. 

In the Stadium District, the contractor will continue installing utilities in Division Avenue from J Street to K Street and at the N. Tacoma Avenue and N. 1st Street intersection. In the N. 1st St./N. E Street closure near Stadium High School, crews will do more concrete pours as part of the rail installation. They also will work on traffic signals and lighting.

In the Dome District, the contractor continues to build the expanded Operations and Maintenance Facility, and this work will involve closing one lane on E. 25th St. this week. In addition, the contractor will start staging equipment and storing materials in a laydown yard on property located at the north side of Puyallup Avenue and East K Street. The City of Tacoma owns this property and issued a permit for this use.

Where

Division Avenue from J Street to K Street – lane closure. The contractor is installing underground utilities on Division Ave. from J St. to K St. The westbound lane on Division Ave. is closed between J and K Streets during weekdays. The Division Ave. and J St. intersection will be completely closed for the weekends of August 9 and August 23. On these weekends, work will start on Friday at 8 p.m. and end on Monday at 5 a.m. Follow detours on I St., 6th Ave., and Martin Luther King Jr. Way. 

N. Tacoma Avenue and N. 1st Street intersection – lane restrictions. Crews will work on traffic signals and electrical work in the intersection. N. 1st Street will be open to two-way traffic. Two-way traffic is maintained on N. Tacoma Ave. This signals work is expected to take one more week. 

Martin Luther King Jr. Way and S. 13th Street intersection – northbound lane closure. This week, crews will move to the intersection of MLK Jr. Way and S. 13th Street to do stormwater work. The northbound lane of MLK Jr. Way will be closed at S. 14th St. to Earnest Brazill Street. In addition, S. 13th St. will be closed in both directions of MLK Jr. Way for a about a half block. During non-working hours, MLK Jr. Way will be open to two-way traffic, and parking will be available. The utility work in this intersection is expected to last through this week and then move to MLK Jr. Way and 14th St.  

Martin Luther King Jr. Way and S. 18th Street intersection – southbound lane closure. Crews are installing stormwater pipes and structures at the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Way and S. 18th Street. The southbound lane of MLK Jr. Way is closed from S. 17th Street to S. 18th Street. S. 18th Street is closed on the east side of MLK Jr. Way for less than a half block. Please follow the detour on S. J Street. The work in this location is expected to take another week and then move to S. 8th St. 

Martin Luther King Jr. Way between S. 13th St. and S. 15th St. – lane restrictions. Crews continue building foundations for the Link power poles on MLK Jr. Way. They are working in the west side of MLK Jr. Way from 13th St. going south to S. 15th St. 

E. 25th Street between McKinley Avenue and S. J St – eastbound lane closed. The eastbound lane on E. 25th St. between McKinley Ave. and S. J St. will be closed this week, so a crane can offload steel for the Operations and Maintenance Facility.

Stadium Way between Division Avenue and N. Tacoma Avenue – street closed. Stadium Way/N. E Street/N. 1st Street is closed to traffic just north of Division Avenue to N. Tacoma Avenue. Construction will last the entire summer break to about September 4. Please follow detour routes on Stadium Way, N. 1st Street, Division Avenue, N. E Street, Broadway and Tacoma Avenue. To access the Rankos and Platinum Salon parking lots, take N. 2nd Street to N. E Street. Several crews are working in this area at the same time, including installing rail and pouring concrete. Crews are working on Saturdays. 

Stadium Way from Division to 4th Street: southbound lane closure; use detours. Stadium Way is closed to southbound traffic from Division Avenue to the 4th Street. Crews installed the first track on Stadium Way south of Division Avenue.

  • Driveway and pedestrian access is maintained, although some sidewalks and crosswalks will be temporarily closed. Pedestrian detours will be in place.
  • Construction noise related to replacing the underground utilities.
  • Large construction equipment or materials may be in the right-of-way.
  • Work will generally take place during the daytime hours unless otherwise noted. Daytime hours during the week are 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. The contractor usually works less hours.
  • Businesses are open during construction.
  • Plan ahead and allow extra time to reach your destination.
