Construction not planned in Stadium and Hilltop Business Districts from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day

The contractor does not plan to do construction work in the Stadium Business District and Hilltop Business District from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day. In Stadium, this area includes N. 1st Street from Broadway to Yakima Avenue and Division Avenue from Yakima to Martin Luther King Jr. Way. In Hilltop, this area includes Martin Luther King Jr. Way from S. 9th Street to S. 15th Street. The contractor is planning just limited work on Stadium Way during the holidays. On Commerce Street, the contractor may request to do utility or potholing work in December. The contractor may install Link power poles and do emergency repairs, such as street lighting, in the business districts during the holidays.

This week, crews will continue track installation on E. 25th Street near the Operations and Maintenance Facility and will continue track installation on the east side of MLK Jr. Way from S. 17th to S. 19th St. Crews are also installing track on the west side of MLK Jr. Way from S. 9th St. across 6th Avenue, and plan to open the 6th Avenue intersection by end of day on Wed, Nov. 25. In addition, crews are installing foundations for Link power poles on Division Avenue near Wright Park, and installing signals and lighting at MLK Jr. Way and Earnest Brazill St. Crews also are installing poles along the route at night from 7 pm to 5 am. 

Looking ahead, crews will start installing track on the east side of Martin Luther King Jr. Way from Division Ave. to S. 5th St. near Kaiser Permanente and Tacoma General as soon as December 2. The contractor will not be working during the Thanksgiving weekend, Nov. 26-29. Happy Thanksgiving!

  • East 25th Street from E. G St. to E. J St. – eastbound lane closure. Crews are installing track on E. 25th St. near the Operations and Maintenance Facility, closing E. 25th St. to eastbound traffic between E. G St. and E. J St. Please follow the detour on Puyallup Avenue. E. 25th St. will be closed in both directions between E. G St. and McKinley Ave. next week.
  • Division Avenue from MLK Jr. Way to Yakima Avenue – lane restrictions. Crews are installing foundations for Link power poles on Division Avenue from MLK Jr. Way to Yakima Avenue (the Wright Park side of Division Ave).
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Way from S. 9th Street to 6th Avenue – southbound lane closure. Crews are installing track on the west side of Martin Luther King Jr. Way, starting in the S. 9th St. and MLK Jr. Way intersection going north across 6th Avenue. Crews will excavate, place the rail, pour concrete around the rail, and pave. The southbound lane on MLK Jr. Way is closed between 6th Avenue and S. 9th St. In addition, S. 7th St. and 6th Ave. are closed on the west side of MLK Jr. Way to the alley. Please follow the detour on S. J St., 6th Ave., Sprague Ave., and S. 11th St. The contractor plans to open the intersection at 6th Avenue and MLK Jr. Way by the end of the day on Wed, Nov. 25. 
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Way and Earnest Brazill Street – lane restriction. Crews are installing signals and lighting on the east side of MLK Jr. Way at Earnest Brazill St. This work will take place Nov. 23-25.
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Way from S. 17 St. to S. 19th St. – street closure and intersection closures. Crews are installing track on the east side of Martin Luther King Jr. Way from S. 17th St. to S. 19th St. Crews will excavate, bring rail into place, pour concrete around the rail, and pave. Martin Luther King Jr. Way is closed to northbound traffic from S. 19th St. to S. 17th St., S. 17th St., and S. 18th St. are closed east of MLK Jr. Way to the alley. Please follow the detour on S. J St. This work is expected to continue in a full street closure  through mid-December.

  • Driveway and pedestrian access is maintained, although some sidewalks and crosswalks will be temporarily closed. Pedestrian detours will be in place.

  • Construction noise related to replacing the underground utilities and installing track.
  • Large construction equipment or materials may be in the right-of-way.
  • Work will generally take place during the daytime hours unless otherwise noted. Daytime hours during the week are 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. The contractor usually works less hours.
  • Businesses are open during construction.
  • Plan ahead and allow extra time to reach your destination.
