Division Ave and Yakima Ave intersection closes during weekend of May 17

To install a new stormwater system, the contractor will completely close the intersection at Division Avenue and Yakima Avenue/N. 1st Street during the weekends (Friday evening through Monday morning) of May 17-20 and May 31- June 3. This work can happen during the day and night (continuous construction). Crews are expected to complete the stormwater work at the intersection of N. 1st St. and G St. by May 14. They will continue water work on Martin Luther King Jr. Way near Tacoma General Hospital and on Martin Luther King Jr. Way from Earnest Brazill Street to S. 13th Street in Hilltop. Rail welding and traction power substation work continue on Stadium Way. Crews are building foundations for power poles along Martin Luther King Jr. Way.

Construction and traffic closures at the intersection of Division Ave. and Yakima Ave /N. 1st St, Martin Luther King Jr. Way, and Stadium Way

Where

Division Avenue and Yakima Avenue/N. 1st Street – intersection closure. To install a new stormwater system, the contractor will completely close the intersection at Division Avenue and N. 1st Street/Yakima Avenue during the weekends of May 17-20 and May 31- June 3. In addition, N. 1st St. will be closed to thru-traffic from G St. to Yakima Ave. Because this intersection is so busy, the contractor is only allowed to work in it when traffic is manageable, such as weekends. The contractor has obtained a noise variance from the City of Tacoma and can work day and night (continuous construction). Please follow detours on I Street, 6th Avenue and Tacoma Avenue. 

N. 1st Street and G Street – street closure. Crews continue stormwater work in the intersection of N. 1st St. and G St., and this intersection is closed. The contractor opens N. 1st St. to one-way westbound traffic at night. This intersection work is expected to be completed by May 14. The contractor plans to return to N. 1st St. near Tacoma Avenue as early as May 21 to install a water line. 

Martin Luther King Jr. Way from S. 5th St. to S. 3rd St – lane restrictions. Crews will install a water pipe across Martin Luther King Jr. Way at 5th Street and then at 3rd Street near Tacoma General Hospital. During this overall work, MLK Jr. Way will have to be closed for about 10-15 minutes at these locations to complete the installation. The work is expected to take place at 5th St. on May 13-14 and near 3rd St. on May 15-16. Please follow the detour routes on 6th Avenue, J Street and 3rd Street. At all other times, MLK Jr. Way will be open to two-way traffic. During the work at 5th Street, the 5th Street intersection will be closed on the west side of MLK Jr. Way. Please turn right onto 5th St. to exit the Baker parking garage. Access to the hospitals, medical centers and emergency department continues to be open.

Martin Luther King Jr. Way from S. Earnest Brazill St. to S 13th St. – southbound lane closure. The contractor continues to work on underground utilities on Martin Luther King Jr. Way from Earnest Brazill St. to S 13th Street.  MLK Jr. Way is closed to northbound traffic from Earnest Brazill St. to S 14th St.  Follow detours on M Street and J Street. The street will be open to two-way traffic during non-working hours. In addition, the contractor will do stormwater work at the S. 13th St and MLK Jr. Way intersection. S 13th Street will be closed on both sides of MLK Jr. Way for a half block to the alleys. After crews complete the water line from Earnest Brazill St. to S 13th St., they will continue the this work on MLK Jr. Way going south to the next block. 

Martin Luther King Jr. Way from S. 19th St. to S. 16th St. – lane restrictions. Crews continue building foundations for the power poles on the east side of MLK Jr. Way from 19th St. to 16th St. Two-way traffic is maintained.

Stadium Way from Broadway to the 705 on-ramp: southbound lane closure; use detours. Stadium Way is closed to southbound traffic from Broadway to the 705 onramp. Crews continue welding rail, cutting pavement and building a traction power substation on Stadium Way. The traction power substation is located on the hillside along Stadium Way north of 4th St. Please follow the detours on St. Helens Ave., Broadway and Tacoma Ave, and consider other routes to access downtown and/or 705. One-way traffic going north on Stadium Way is open, including left-turns only at the S. 4th St. signal.

  • Driveway and pedestrian access is maintained, although some sidewalks and crosswalks will be temporarily closed. Pedestrian detours will be in place.
  • Construction noise related to replacing the underground utilities.
  • Large construction equipment or materials may be in the right-of-way.
  • Work will generally take place during the daytime hours. Daytime hours during the week are 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. The contractor usually works less hours.
  • Businesses are open during construction.
  • Plan ahead and allow extra time to reach your destination.
  • Due to inclement weather or unforeseen issues, dates and times are subject to change.
