Division Ave and Yakima Ave intersection closes during weekend of May 31
To install a stormwater system, the contractor will completely close the intersection at Division Avenue and Yakima Avenue/N. 1st Street during the weekend of May 31 – June 3 (Friday at 8 p.m. to Monday at 5 a.m.). This work can happen during the day and night (continuous construction).
Crews continue to install stormwater pipes and manholes on Commerce Street, resulting in a Commerce Street complete closure between S. 7th Street and the 705 onramp. Rail welding and traction power substation work continue on Stadium Way. In the Stadium District, crews are expected to complete the water line on N. 1st Street between Tacoma Avenue and G Street this week. In Hilltop, the contractor will continue working on the water line on Martin Luther King Jr. Way from 13th Street to 14th Street. In addition, crews are building foundations for power poles along Martin Luther King Jr. Way. Crews are moving out of the area on Martin Luther King Jr. Way from Division Ave. to 6th Ave. near the hospitals. The contractor is not working on Memorial Day.

Division Avenue and Yakima Avenue/N. 1st Street – intersection closure. To install a new stormwater system, the contractor will completely close the intersection at Division Avenue and N. 1st Street/Yakima Avenue during the weekend of May 31- June 3 (Friday at 8 p.m. to Monday at 5 a.m.). In addition, N. 1st St. will be closed to thru-traffic from G St. to Yakima Ave. Because this intersection is so busy, the contractor is only allowed to work in it when traffic is manageable, such as weekends. The contractor has obtained a noise variance from the City of Tacoma and can work day and night (continuous construction). Please follow detours on I Street, 6th Avenue and Tacoma Avenue. Next weekend (June 8 and 9), the contractor will work in the Division Ave. and I St. intersection.
Commerce Street from 7th Street to the 705 onramp – street closure. Commerce Street will be closed in both directions from 7th Street to the 705 onramp for approximately three weeks. Access to the parking lots on Commerce Street will be open. Sidewalks and the Spanish Steps also will be open. To access Commerce St. from I-705, take the A Street/Tacoma City Center exit. To access the 705, follow the detours to S. 9th St. During the Commerce Street closure, Stadium Way will be open in both directions between S. 4th Street and the I-705 on-ramp. Crews are installing stormwater pipes and manholes.
N. 1st Street from Tacoma Ave to G Street – lane closure. Crews are installing a water line on the north side of N. 1st St. from Tacoma Avenue to G Street. This work is expected to be completed later this week. Two-way traffic is maintained from Tacoma Ave. to the Thriftway driveway and from G St. to Yakima Ave. The southbound lane is closed from the Thriftway driveway to G St. N. G Street will be open and access maintained to the parking lot. The street will be open to two-way traffic during non-working hours.
Martin Luther King Jr. Way from S. 13th Street to S. 14th Street – southbound lane closure. The contractor continues to work on underground utilities on Martin Luther King Jr. Way from S 13th Street to S. 14th Street. MLK Jr. Way is closed to northbound traffic from S 15th St. to S. 13th St. Follow detours on M Street and J Street. The street will be open to two-way traffic during non-working hours. After crews complete the water line from S 13th St. to S. 14th St., they will continue the this work on MLK Jr. Way going south to the next block.
South 13th Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Way intersection – closure. S 13th Street will be closed on both sides of MLK Jr. Way for a half block to the alleys. Crews are installing stormwater pipes underground. Parking will be opened up, if possible, during non-working hours.
Martin Luther King Jr. Way from S. 11th St. to S. 6th Ave. – lane restrictions. Crews continue building foundations for the power poles on MLK Jr. Way. They will move to the area on MLK Jr. Way from 11th St. to 6th Ave. Two-way traffic is maintained.
Stadium Way from Broadway to 4th Street: southbound lane closure; use detours. Stadium Way is closed to southbound traffic from Broadway to the 4th Street. Stadium Way is open to two-way traffic from 4th Street to the 705 onramp. Crews continue welding rail, cutting pavement and building a traction power substation on Stadium Way. The traction power substation is located on the hillside along Stadium Way north of 4th St. Please follow the detours on St. Helens Ave., Broadway and Tacoma Ave, and consider other routes to access downtown and/or 705. One-way traffic going north on Stadium Way is open, including left-turns at S. 4th St. and Division Ave.

- Driveway and pedestrian access is maintained, although some sidewalks and crosswalks will be temporarily closed. Pedestrian detours will be in place.

Construction begins in front of Stadium High School on June 20 for the summer break
The contractor plans to start construction in front of Stadium High School on June 20 (the day after the last day of school). E Street/N. 1st Street is expected to be closed from Division Avenue to Tacoma Avenue during the entire summer break. We are working with the high school, businesses and apartments in the area to coordinate access and other issues. We will provide more information about this work soon.
