Rail welding continues on Stadium Way and multiple lane closures along the route during the week of May 6

Crews will continue welding rail and building the traction power substation on Stadium Way. Stadium Way is closed southbound from Broadway to the 705. The contractor will continue stormwater work on N. 1st St. in the Stadium District. Water line work will continue on Martin Luther King Jr. Way from S. 5th Street to S. 6th Avenue near Tacoma General Hospital, and from Earnest Brazill Street to S. 13th Street in Hilltop. Crews continue building foundations for power poles on MLK Jr. Way. The contractor is doing stormwater work on E. 25th St. near Sound Transit’s Operations and Maintenance Facility.

Where

Stadium Way from Broadway to the 705 on-ramp: southbound lane closure; use detours. Stadium Way is closed to southbound traffic from Broadway to the 705 onramp. Crews continue welding rail, cutting pavement and building a traction power substation on Stadium Way. The traction power substation is located on the hillside along Stadium Way north of 4th St. Please follow the detours on St. Helens Ave., Broadway and Tacoma Ave. One-way traffic going north on Stadium Way is open. 

N. 1st Street from Tacoma Ave to Yakima Ave – northbound lane closure. The contractor continues stormwater work on N. 1st Street. The first phase will connect roof drains to the new stormwater system. After this work is completed, crews will work in the intersection of G St. and N. 1st St.

Martin Luther King Jr. Way from S. Earnest Brazill St. to S 13th St.  – southbound lane closure. The contractor continues to work on underground utilities on Martin Luther King Jr. Way from Earnest Braziil St. to S 13th Street.  MLK Jr. Way is closed to southbound traffic from Earnest Brazill St. to S 13th St.  Follow detours on M Street and J Street. In addition, S. 13th St and MLK Jr. Way intersection – S 13th Street is closed on the west side of MLK Jr. Way for a half block.  After the contractor completes the water line from Earnest Brazill St. to S 13th St., they will continue the water line work on MLK Jr. Way going south one block at a time.

Martin Luther King Jr. Way from 5th St. to 6th Ave – lane restrictions. Crews are installing a new waterline on Martin Luther King Jr. Way from Division Ave. to 6th Ave, and currently are working in the section from 5th Street to 6th Ave. Two-way traffic will be maintained on Martin Luther King Jr. Way. 5th Street well remain open. Access to the hospitals, medical centers and emergency department continues to be open.

Martin Luther King Jr. Way from 19th St. to 16th St. – lane restrictions. Crews continue building foundations for the power poles on the east side of MLK Jr. Way from 19th St. to 16th St.. Two-way traffic is maintained.

East 25th Street from McKinley Ave E to East J St – street closure. E. 25th Street is closed to thru traffic from McKinley Ave. to J St. Please follow detour routes on G St. and K St. The contractor is working on underground utilities near Sound Transit’s Operations and Maintenance Facility in the Dome District.

  • Driveway and pedestrian access is maintained, although some sidewalks and crosswalks will be temporarily closed. Pedestrian detours will be in place.
  • Construction noise related to replacing the underground utilities.
  • Large construction equipment or materials may be in the right-of-way.
