Utility work at MLK Jr Way and 8th Street starts the week of August 19

In Hilltop, crews will begin stormwater work at Martin Luther King Jr. Way and S. 8th St. this week. The contractor also will do utility work at MLK Jr. Way and S. 16th St., and electrical work in the alley just west of MLK Jr. Way and S. 15th. Crews continue to install Link power poles on Martin Luther King Jr. Way from S. Earnest Brazill St. to S. 14th Street. Martin Luther King Jr. Way will be open between S. 9th St and S. 15th St for the Hilltop Street Fair on Aug. 24! See you there! 

The Division Avenue and J Street intersection will be completely closed for underground utility work during the weekend of August 23. The contractor obtained a noise variance from the City of Tacoma, and will work day and night (continuous construction) during this weekend. 

In the N. 1st St./N. E Street closure near Stadium High School, crews will do more concrete pours as part of the rail installation.

In the Dome District, the contractor continues to build the expanded Operations and Maintenance Facility, and this work involves a closure on E. 25th St. In addition, the contractor is staging equipment and storing materials in a laydown yard on property located at the north side of Puyallup Avenue and East K Street. This property is located in the City of Tacoma right-of-way.

Construction and traffic restrictions on Martin Luther King Jr. Way, S. 16th St., S. 8th St.,  Division Avenue, N. J Street, Stadium Way, and E. 25th Street

Where

Martin Luther King Jr. Way and S. 8th Street intersection – northbound lane closure. Crews will install stormwater pipes and structures at the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Way and S. 8th Street. The northbound lane of MLK Jr. Way will be closed from S. 9th St. to S. 7th Street. In addition, S. 8th Street will be closed on the west side of MLK Jr. Way to the alley. Please follow the detour on S. J Street. The work in this location is expected to take three to four weeks.  

Martin Luther King Jr. Way and S. 16th Street intersection – southbound lane closure. This week, crews will move to the intersection of MLK Jr. Way and S. 16th Street to do stormwater work. The southbound lane of MLK Jr. Way will be closed at S. 15th St. to S. 16th St. During non-working hours, MLK Jr. Way will be open to two-way traffic, and parking will be available. 

Division Avenue from J Street to K Street – lane closure and then intersection closure on the weekend. The contractor is installing underground utilities on Division Ave. from J St. to K St. The utility work is expected to last through October. During the weekdays, the westbound lane on Division Ave. will be closed between J and K Streets. On the weekend of August 23, the Division Ave. and J St. intersection will be completely closed. Follow detours on I St., 6th Ave., and Martin Luther King Jr. Way. The weekend work can take place day and night (continuous construction). The contractor obtained a noise variance from the City of Tacoma to do night-time work on this weekend.

Martin Luther King Jr. Way between Earnest Brazill St. and S. 14th St. – lane restrictions. Crews continue building foundations for the Link power poles on MLK Jr. Way. They are working in the west side of MLK Jr. Way from Earnest Brazill St. going south to S. 14th St. 

E. 25th Street between McKinley Avenue and S. J St – eastbound lane closed. The eastbound lane on E. 25th St. between McKinley Ave. and S. J St. is closed this week, so a crane can offload steel for the Operations and Maintenance Facility.

Stadium Way between Division Avenue and N. Tacoma Avenue – street closed. Stadium Way/N. E Street/N. 1st Street is closed to traffic just north of Division Avenue to N. Tacoma Avenue. The street will be open by the first day of school on Sept. 5. Please follow detour routes on Stadium Way, N. 1st Street, Division Avenue, N. E Street, Broadway and Tacoma Avenue. To access the Rankos and Platinum Salon parking lots, take N. 2nd Street to N. E Street. Crews are installing rail and pouring concrete. Crews are installing a new sidewalk in front of Stadium High School's theatre and gym, starting August 20. The sidewalk from just past the Rankos' down to the high school will be closed on the school side of the street -- through Friday this week. The sidewalk on the opposite side of the street (from the Harvester to Division Ave) will be open. Crews are working until 9 p.m. and on Saturdays. 

Stadium Way from Division to 4th Street: southbound lane closure; use detours. Stadium Way is closed to southbound traffic from Division Avenue to the 4th Street. Crews installed the first track on Stadium Way south of Division Avenue.

  • Driveway and pedestrian access is maintained, although some sidewalks and crosswalks will be temporarily closed. Pedestrian detours will be in place.
  • Construction noise related to replacing the underground utilities.
  • Large construction equipment or materials may be in the right-of-way.
  • Work will generally take place during the daytime hours unless otherwise noted. Daytime hours during the week are 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. The contractor usually works less hours.
  • Businesses are open during construction.
  • Plan ahead and allow extra time to reach your destination.
