As weather improves, utility work resumes

To be safe in the wintery weather conditions, the construction crews did not work on Monday, Feb. 11 and may have a limited work schedule later this week. If the weather improves later this week, crews will continue the underground utility work along the route. Work will take place in new locations on Martin Luther King Jr. Way. The sewer work on North 1st Street. is expected to move to Division in between Yakima and I Street. The sewer work will continue on Commerce Street from 7th Street to the Theater District Station.

Week of Feb. 11

Where

Martin Luther King Jr. Way in between 19th Street and 14th Street – lane restrictions. Crews are creating foundations for the overhead contact system, including doing potholing on the east side of Martin Luther King Jr. Way, starting at 19th Street and going north to 14th Street. Two-way traffic will be maintained.

Martin Luther King Jr. Way near 3rd Street – lane restrictions. Crews will do potholing work on Martin Luther King Jr. Way near 3rd Street and Tacoma General Hospital. Two-way traffic will be maintained. 

North 1st Street between G Street and Yakima Avenue – northbound lane closure. The northbound lane on North 1st Street is closed in between North G Street and Yakima Avenue. As crews complete this phase of utility work in this section, they will move onto Division Avenue in between Yakima Avenue and North I Street. North 1st Street is open to one lane of traffic. Crews are working on a sewer bypass and a deep sewer line.

Commerce Street: 7th Street. to I-705 on-ramp – lane restrictions. Commerce Street in between 7th Street and the Theater District Station will be closed in both directions to thru traffic. To access the 705/Stadium Way onramp, follow South 9th to Pacific Avenue to 7th Street to Commerce Street. Access to Commerce Street from the 705/Stadium Way exit continues to be closed. Detours are in place. The contractor is installing a new sewer.

Stadium Way: Division to South 4th Street – intersection closures and southbound lane closure; use detours. Currently, the intersection of Stadium Way and Division Avenue is closed. After crews complete the water work at this intersection, this intersection will open. Then crews will close South 4th Street. in between Broadway and Stadium Way for water line and electrical work.

Southbound on Stadium Way continues to be closed to traffic from Broadway to South 4th Street. Please follow the detours on St. Helens Avenue, Broadway and Tacoma Avenue. One-way traffic going north on Stadium Way is open. The contractor is working on both water and storm drainage systems.

  • Driveway and pedestrian access is maintained, although some sidewalks and crosswalks will be temporarily closed. Pedestrian detours will be in place.
  • Construction noise related to replacing the underground utilities.
  • Large construction equipment or materials may be in the right-of-way.
  • Work will generally take place during the daytime hours.
  • Businesses are open during construction.
  • Plan ahead, leave early and allow extra time to reach your destination.
