reel icon What is this thing? 👀 It’s a rail miller, and it plays an important role in system maintenance.

Rail milling smooths the rail surface to help maintain track quality and address wear. We’ve been doing more of this work lately as part of our ongoing efforts to improve system reliability.

The machine can reshape rails in fewer passes than traditional grinding, helping our teams get more work done during limited maintenance hours. But it works best on long, connected sections of track and needs a clear path to do its job. That means we need to coordinate this work carefully with other maintenance and construction projects, sometimes scheduling it outside our regular monthly maintenance closures.
