Sound Transit and the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation are joining forces one month before the Puget Sound Region hosts the world's largest 5K walk and run series to fight breast cancer. To kick off the partnership, Sound Transit today unveiled a Sounder Commuter Rail locomotive wrapped with a pink ribbon to promote the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation's June 17 Puget Sound Race for the Cure®

"Sound Transit's regional services are about connecting communities," said Sound Transit Board Chair and Pierce County Executive John Ladenburg. "So when a community comes together in support of a cause, we're ready to offer a helping hand.

During the unveiling event today at Seattle's King Street Station, Sound Transit also announced special "Ride for the Cure" Sounder rail service for south line participants in the Race for the Cure®. The Race Day Sounder train will serve walkers and runners on their way to the race's start at Qwest Field from Tacoma, Puyallup, Sumner, Auburn, Kent and Tukwila.

"I'd also like to thank the BNSF Railway Company for their support and cooperation in setting up this special Race Day service," added Ladenburg."

"Sounder service on Race Day and the high-visibility call to action on this Sounder locomotive supports the fight against an illness that affects our entire community," said Connie Anderson, Board Chair of the Komen Puget Sound Affiliate. "Washington State has the highest incidence of breast cancer in the country and one in eight women will be diagnosed in her lifetime. We've made great strides but there is much more to do. That's why we have the June 17th Race for the Cure®."

"We encourage Race participants from Pierce and South King Counties to ride Sounder and all other Race participants to use Sound Transit's ST Express bus service to Qwest Field on Race Day," said Komen Puget Sound Race Chair Sue Gilman.

Race officials also emphasized that team registration is open until May 30th online and in selected sports stores.
