Honoring heritage: A guide to Latinx celebrations in the Puget Sound

Celebrate the vibrant and enduring spirit of Latinx heritage with events near transit!

Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 is National Hispanic Heritage Month, a time to recognize the rich histories, diverse cultures, and significant contributions of people with roots in Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.

Here's a guide to some of the festivities and cultural centers around the region:

Seattle

Art Exhibit @ Gallery Axis - Sin Fronteras Sept. 4 to Oct. 2

7-minute walk from International District/Chinatown Station

They Drift (Carlos Aguilar) brings Sin Fronteras to Axis Gallery, a powerful solo show that blends portraiture, abstraction, and street art into a vivid statement on identity, movement, and belonging. With roots in graffiti and over two decades shaping public space through art, Aguilar’s work is bold, layered, and deeply personal. Guest artist Se7en joins the lineup, adding another sharp voice to this conversation on culture without borders.

Seattle Escribe @ Waterfront Park Sept. 11 (6 p.m. – 11 p.m.)

8-minute walk from the Symphony Station

Experience an evening of Spanish-language spoken word poetry at Seattle Escribe’s 'Spotlight at Waterfront Park.' Set against the sunset at the Salish Steps amphitheater on the Overlook Walk, this free, family-friendly event features talented local poets sharing work in Español, with the natural beauty of Elliot Bay and the city skyline as your backdrop

Sea Mar Fiestas Patrias 20 @ Seattle Center Sept. 13-14

Take the 1 Line to Westlake Station, then hop onto the Monorail

Kick off the month at the Sea Mar Fiestas Patrias, happening Sept. 13–14 at the Armory and Fisher Pavilion. This event features live music, traditional folk-dance performances, art exhibitions, and delicious Latin American food. It's a great way to kick off Latinx Heritage Month!

El Centro de la Raza

2-minute walk from Beacon Hill Station

The historic cultural center and community hub for Seattle's Latino community since 1972 is a great place to visit and support during Latinx Heritage Month. The center is located at Plaza Roberto Maestas. 

Eastside

El Grito De Independencia @ Centro Cultural Mexicano Sept. 13 (2–4 p.m.)

7-minute walk from Downtown Redmond Station

One of the most anticipated moments in Latinx culture is "El Grito de Independencia," where the start of the independence movement is honored with shouts of “¡Viva México!” The evening will be celebrated with mariachis, food, and a festive atmosphere full of pride and unity.

Hispanic Heritage Month Art Exhibition @ Centro Cultural Mexicano Sept 15. – Oct. 15 (9 a.m. – 5 p.m.)

7-minute walk from Downtown Redmond Station

In commemoration of Hispanic Heritage Month, the Centro Cultural Mexicano will celebrate the talent, culture, and roots of the community through the work of Latin American artists who, through their art, pay tribute to the richness and pride of Hispanic heritage. This exhibition aims to be a space for reflection, identity, and celebration — where art becomes a bridge that connects generations and traditions. 

Tacoma

Festival Herencia Latina @ Tacoma Armory Sept. 13 (Noon – 5 p.m.)

This community festival celebrates the diverse Latin American heritages present in Washington. Perfect for the whole family, it includes music and dance performances by professional and cultural groups, as well as a craft and service market, food, art and dance workshops, and activities for children.

Tacoma Art Museum

Near the T Line's Union Station, the Tacoma Art Museum is a great place to experience art from around the world. During Latinx Heritage Month, the museum often features exhibitions by Latinx artists or hosts special events. The museum is a short walk from the station, making it a great destination for a day of cultural immersion.

Latinx Heritage Month is a chance to celebrate and learn about communities that have shaped our city and nation. As conversations around immigration continue, let's use this month to remember the Latinx community is a vital part of the American story, built on resilience and strength.
