Lane closures on Interstate 5

Publish Date

Starting as early as Monday, May 4, and lasting through May 11, drivers on southbound Interstate 5 near the Midway Landfill should anticipate a shoulder closure. Most of this work will take place from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Overnight on May 7 and May 11 from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., we anticipate closing two right lanes and the shoulder to install a precast barrier for the I-5 temporary access to the landfill. This work will create access points that crews will need throughout the construction phase.

Construction activities along the Federal Way Link Extension

Throughout Governor Inslee’s statewide Stay at Home, Stay Healthy orders, Sound Transit remains focused on our regional light rail expansion from Angle Lake to Federal Way. Under stringent health guidelines in the face of COVID-19, our dedicated team of engineers, construction experts and project staff have continued to collaborate to keep the project moving forward.

During the last month, we advanced design work, permitting and vegetation removal, and construction is underway along the entire 7.8-mile route. Crews are demolishing buildings and preparing the construction site for future activities.

Our commitment to the community

Major construction can be disruptive to neighborhood businesses and residents. Sound Transit is committed to being a good neighbor throughout all project development phases. We’ll update you with any changes to work sites or schedules, as well as to temporary road closures, detours, parking adjustments or changes at any other public facilities.

Contractors follow standard requirements when in residential areas. They will:

  • Maintain a safe and secure worksite.
  • Keep the site and the immediately surrounding area clean.
  • Maintain access to nearby homes and businesses.
  • Minimize noise and lighting impacts.
  • Minimize parking impacts from construction equipment and employee vehicles.

Responding to heightened COVID-19 concerns

Sound Transit is committed to keeping riders and transit operators safe. If you must travel during the stay-at-home orders, please take a few moments to review our rider safety precautions.

In addition to assuring rider safety, we’re addressing changes in ridership. Sound Transit recently announced additional service reductions on Link light rail and ST Express due to fluctuating staffing availability. Link light rail trains are now running every 30 minutes (instead of every 20), and will operate with the maximum capacity of four cars per train to allow for social distancing.
