Nighttime noise at Maple Leaf Portal

Construction at the Maple Leaf Portal for the Northgate Link extension is about to shift to a new phase that includes 24-hours-a-day tunneling activities.

Sound Transit obtained a major public project construction variance from the city of Seattle for 36 months of nighttime tunneling work. The variance will be in effect as soon as Tuesday, May 27, 2014.

The noise variance allows the contractor to work between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. weekdays and 10 p.m. and 9 a.m. weekends and holidays. The work will take place between Interstate 5 and First Avenue NE from NE 92nd Street to NE 103rd Street.

Crews will take every reasonable step necessary to keep noise to a minimum. With few exceptions, construction noise is not expected to rise above the average noise from traffic on I-5.
