Stadium Way closes at Division Avenue to N. Tacoma Avenue on June 20

Beginning on June 20, Stadium Way/N. E Street/N. 1st Street will be completely closed to traffic just north of Division Avenue to N. Tacoma Avenue. Construction will last the entire summer break to about September 4. More.

This week the contractor will start installing the project's first track on Stadium Way south of Division Avenue. The contractor will install two, 300-foot strands of rail in this area. After laying the track, crews will pour concrete in this section. Then the "test track" will be inspected for two weeks.  

In Hilltop, the contractor will continue working on the water line on Martin Luther King Jr. Way from 14th Street to 15th Street and in the MLK Jr. Way and 14th St. intersection. In addition, crews are building foundations for the Link power poles along Martin Luther King Jr. Way. On N. 1st Street, the contractor is coordinating with Tacoma Public Utilities to connect customers to the new water line. The contractor has temporarily stopped working on the traction power substation along Stadium Way. Crews will open Commerce Street to two-way traffic on June 20.

Where

Stadium Way between Division Avenue and N. Tacoma Avenue – street closed. Beginning on June 20, Stadium Way/N. E Street/N. 1st Street will be completely closed to traffic just north of Division Avenue to N. Tacoma Avenue. Construction will last the entire summer break to about September 4. Please follow detour routes on Stadium Way, N. 1st Street, Division Avenue, N. E Street, Broadway and Tacoma Avenue. Stadium Way will be open to one-way traffic going up the hill from the 705. Stadium Way will be open to two-way traffic from 4th Street to the 705, and Commerce Street will be open to two-way traffic from the 705 to 9th Street. Large trucks (SU-30 or longer than a 30-foot box truck) and buses are advised not to travel on Stadium Way and to follow other routes, such as 9th Street to Tacoma Avenue. Another option is to drive smaller trucks on Stadium Way and turn at Division Avenue.

Stadium Way from Division to 4th Street: southbound lane closure; use detours. Stadium Way is closed to southbound traffic from Division Avenue to the 4th Street. This week, the contractor begins installing the first track on Stadium Way south of Division Avenue. Crews temporarily stopped working on a traction power substation on Stadium Way, located on the hillside north of 4th St.The rail welding on Stadium Way is completed, and rail is stored on Stadium Way north of the 705.

Martin Luther King Jr. Way at S. 14th Street to S. 16th Street – southbound lane closure. The contractor continues to install a water line on Martin Luther King Jr. Way from S 14th Street to S. 16th Street.  The southbound lane MLK Jr. Way is closed, and the northbound lane is open. Crews may also work on some small areas on MLK Jr. Way from 12th St. to 13th St. MLK Jr. Way will be opened to two-way traffic during non-work hours, if possible.

S. 14th Street at Martin Luther King Jr. Way – street closure; use detours. Crews are working on a water line at the intersection of MLK Jr. Way and S. 14th St. S. 14th St. is closed for a block on either side of MLK Jr. Way. After work is completed in this intersection, crews will do stormwater and water work at the intersection of MLK Jr. Way and S. 11th St. at the end of June. 

Martin Luther King Jr. Way from S. 9th St. to S. 7th St. – lane restrictions. Crews continue building foundations for the Link power poles on MLK Jr. Way. They are working in the east side of MLK Jr. Way from 9th St. going north to 7th St. Two-way traffic is maintained.

N. 1st Street between Tacoma Avenue and Yakima Avenue – lane restrictions. Crews will connect the new water main to the existing main, and this will involve a lane closure on Tuesday, June 18 near Stadium Thriftway. Tacoma Public Utilities is scheduling the water service connections with customers. Depending on the schedule with customers, TPU's final connections could happen during the day or at night. These TPU final connections also involve some construction work.

Commerce Street from 7th Street to the 705 onramp – street closure. Commerce Street is closed in both directions from 7th Street to the 705 onramp. On June 20, Commerce Street will open to two-way traffic for the summer.  Until June 20, to access Commerce St. from I-705, take the A Street/Tacoma City Center exit. To access the 705, follow the detours to S. 9th St. During the Commerce Street closure, Stadium Way will be open in both directions between S. 4th Street and the I-705 on-ramp.

  • Driveway and pedestrian access is maintained, although some sidewalks and crosswalks will be temporarily closed. Pedestrian detours will be in place.
  • Construction noise related to replacing the underground utilities.
  • Large construction equipment or materials may be in the right-of-way.
  • Work will generally take place during the daytime hours unless otherwise noted. Daytime hours during the week are 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. The contractor usually works less hours.
  • Businesses are open during construction.
  • Plan ahead and allow extra time to reach your destination.
  • Due to inclement weather or unforeseen issues, dates and times are subject to change.
