4. Sounder train fares

Sounder trains travel between Lakewood and Seattle (making stops in South Tacoma, Tacoma Dome, Puyallup, Sumner, Auburn, Kent and Tukwila) and between Everett and Seattle (making stops in Mukilteo and Edmonds). Sounder trains run every 20-45 minutes during weekday morning and afternoon peak hours. While there is no regularly scheduled weekend service, Sounder also serves select major weekend events such as Mariners, Sounders FC and Seahawks games. Adult fares are between $3.25 and $5.75 depending on how far you travel.

Fares are distance based. Day passes are twice the one-way fare and are valid for the date and stations printed on the ticket.

How to pay

Tickets must be purchased prior to boarding. The conductors do not sell tickets. Please have a valid fare before getting on the train. Pay with:

  • Ticket - Buy a Sounder ticket from the ticket machine with cash, Visa or MasterCard. Ticket machines are located all Sounder stations.
  • ORCA card - Tap ORCA before boarding the train and after you get off the train.
  • Transit Go Ticket - download in the app store, set up your account and buy tickets ahead of time so you're ready to ride.

Rail Plus

The Rail Plus program allows riders with monthly ORCA Passes (including Business Passport) to ride four weekday Amtrak Cascades trains between Seattle, Edmonds and Everett free of charge. See the combined schedule here.

How to use Rail Plus

Rail Plus riders must obtain a validation ticket from a Sound Transit ticket machine. Rail Plus tickets are only available on weekdays at ticket machines at Everett, Edmonds, or Seattle-King Street stations.

To obtain a ticket:

  1. Select your destination as Everett, Edmonds, or Seattle-King Street.
  2. Select "Amtrak Rail Plus."
  3. Drop your ORCA card into the card reader slot.
  4. If your pass is valid for Rail Plus, the machine will print a ticket.
  5. Provide the ticket to Amtrak conductors when boarding.

Using Rail Plus at Seattle-King Street Station

At Seattle-King Street Station, Sounder trains board from tracks 1 and 2, which are directly accessible from Weller and Jackson streets. Amtrak trains board from tracks 3-9, which are only accessible from inside King Street Station. After getting a Rail Plus ticket from the ticket machine on the north end of the Sounder platform, walk to King Street Station (a 3-minute walk) and get in line with other Amtrak customers as boarding begins. Amtrak staff will provide a seat assignment and will direct you to the correct car. Please allow more time than you would for boarding a Sounder train.

Using Rail Plus at Edmonds and Everett stations

At Edmonds and Everett stations, Amtrak and Sounder trains share the same platform. After obtaining a Rail Plus ticket, go inside the station and wait to board with other Amtrak customers.
