Annual Service Plan
Recent and upcoming Link light rail openings mean there will be changes to existing ST Express bus service. Learn what these changes could look like for you.
ST Express changes will not be implemented until fall 2026

South King and Pierce counties

When the 1 Line extends to Federal Way Downtown Station, trains will run between Federal Way and Lynnwood via downtown Seattle. 1 Line trains will run every 8-10 minutes during the day, and every 12-15 minutes in the evening and early morning. 1 Line riders traveling to the Eastside can transfer to the 2 Line in downtown Seattle for easy access to Bellevue and Redmond.

If you currently ride ST Express in South King County or Pierce County, your trip could look different as soon as Fall 2026. Changes could include:

  • Improved nighttime bus service.
  • Buses that integrate with the growing Link light rail network.
  • Bus routes with updated schedules.
  • More frequent and reliable service throughout the day — Link trains will arrive about every 8-10 minutes between 6 a.m. and 9 p.m.
  • More seats and overall capacity.
  • More connections to more places throughout the region.

In late 2025, Sound Transit will extend the 1 Line south from Angle Lake Station to Federal Way Downtown.

The 7.8-mile extension includes three new stations:

  • Kent Des Moines, near Highline College.
  • Star Lake, near South 272nd Street.
  • Federal Way Downtown.

1 Line trains will run every 8-10 minutes during the day, and every 12-15 minutes in the evening and early morning. All three stations offer parking: 500 new spaces at Kent Des Moines, 1,240 at Star Lake, and a new 400-space garage at Federal Way Downtown will add to the 1,192 spaces currently available. In total, the three parking facilities will offer a total of 3,332 parking spaces.

Sound Transit currently provides ST Express bus service in south King and Pierce counties that serves the cities of DuPont, Lakewood, Gig Harbor, Tacoma, Puyallup, Bonney Lake, Sumner, Auburn, Federal Way, Kent, SeaTac, Burien, and Tukwila.

Sound Transit currently provides ST Express bus service in south King and Pierce counties, serving DuPont, Lakewood, Gig Harbor, Tacoma, Puyallup, Bonney Lake, Sumner, Auburn, Federal Way, Kent, SeaTac, Burien, and Tukwila.

The following ST Express routes, excluding 560 and 566, serve about 6,700 riders daily; about 75% use routes 574, 578, and 594. Routes 574 and 594 provide service all day from Lakewood via Tacoma to SeaTac and Seattle, respectively. Others, like Route 590, provide supplemental service during the busiest times of the day.

  • 560 // Bellevue – West Seattle
  • 566 // Auburn – Redmond
  • 574 // Lakewood – SeaTac/Airport
  • 577 // Federal Way – Seattle
  • 578 // Puyallup – Seattle via Federal Way
  • 580 // South Hill P&R – Puyallup Station
  • 586 // Tacoma – University of Washington
  • 590 // Tacoma – Seattle
  • 592 // DuPont – Seattle
  • 594 // Lakewood – Seattle
  • 595 // Gig Harbor – Seattle via Tacoma Dome Station

Add new overnight route to the regional network

When Link is not running, a new ST Express route would provide service between Lakewood and Downtown Seattle, with stops in Tacoma, Federal Way, and SeaTac.

What does it mean for passengers?

Passengers would have access to the new overnight service when the Link is not operating. Passengers who currently travel at night between destinations in Lakewood, Tacoma, Federal Way, SeaTac, and Downtown Seattle would be able to get to their destinations using ST Express bus.

The span of service and frequency of this new service is to be determined.

Shorten to Federal Way Downtown Station and Increase Service

Route 574 is proposed to end at Federal Way Downtown Station while the 1 Line is running. The frequency would increase to every 15 minutes for most of the day. A stop would also be added at Lakewood Station.

When the Link is not running, an overnight route (Route TBD) would provide service between Lakewood, Federal Way, SeaTac, and Seattle.

What does this mean for passengers?

Passengers would need to transfer from Route 574 to Link at Federal Way to get to SeaTac and destinations in between. However, to offset the transfer time, the frequency would be 15 minutes for most of the day. Passengers who previously boarded Route 574 along S 188th St would be able to use King County Metro Route 161.

Eliminate Route 580

Due to the 510-space parking garage at Puyallup Station and alternative Pierce Transit Route 400 service between South Hill Park & Ride and Puyallup Station, Route 580 would be eliminated.

What does it mean for passengers?

Passengers who take Route 580 can ride Pierce Transit Route 400 to Puyallup Station instead.

Eliminate Route 586

Route 586 would be eliminated because Routes 577, 590, and 594 (or Sounder S Line) and Link will provide service to the same destinations at the University of Washington with a similar or better travel time. The Federal Way Link Extension will offer improved regional access, frequency, and capacity.

What does it mean for passengers?

Passengers who currently take Route 586 would have several alternatives:

  1. Take Route 577 from Federal Way, Route 590, 594, or Sounder S Line from Tacoma Dome to downtown Seattle to transfer to the 1 Line or 2 Line at International District/Chinatown Station or Symphony Station to access destinations in the University District.
  2. Take the 1 Line directly from Federal Way.
