With the World Cup just a month away, Sound Transit is preparing to welcome the world. We’re working around the clock to ensure our influx of passengers can fully explore our region.
That said, we’re also planning to have some fun along the way.
Before, during, and after matches, expect some station areas to be a little different.
The yellow card readers will remain, but we’re sprinkling in some whimsy to celebrate this summer of soccer. Several events are planned throughout the region, so plan ahead and allow extra time to experience some special activations.
Station activations in Lynnwood, Redmond, and Federal Way
If you’re riding light rail from Lynnwood, Redmond, or Federal Way, keep an eye out for pre-match activities at stations before each game at Seattle Stadium.
In and around Federal Way Downtown Station
Expect live music, food vendors, and more to get you in the game-day spirit. In Federal Way, don’t miss Kickin’ It Federal Way from June 19-21.
This three-day watch party, hosted by the City of Federal Way, the Federal Way Arts Foundation, and the Federal Way Performing Arts and Events Center, will include family activities, soccer tournaments and clinics, food, and more. It’s all just a five-minute walk from the 1 Line station.
Pioneer Square and International District Chinatown
After matches, community ambassadors will hand out snacks between Pioneer Square and International District/Chinatown stations. You might find treats from local favorites like Cone & Steiner, DeLeo’s Pizza, and Pastry Project.
At International District/Chinatown Station, we’ll also use the large plaza space for live music, a Sound Transit Shop pop-up, and food vendors. This way, your wait for the train is more enjoyable.
Juneteenth celebration preview
And for Juneteenth, we’re going all out. While the U.S. Men’s National Team takes on Australia at Seattle Stadium, we’ll honor both the beautiful game and the meaning of the holiday. Sound Transit is partnering with community organizations across the region to host special events.
A future blog post will outline our plans with community partners across the region to acknowledge the holiday.
Plan and make the most of your time
Now, you’re probably wondering, “Why is Sound Transit doing all of this?”
With an estimated 750k people expected in Seattle for the six matches, we want to keep stations from getting overcrowded. Also, we want riders to be comfortable while waiting for trains in our station areas.
By bringing in food, music, and friendly faces, we hope to give everyone a more relaxed experience. It’s hard to feel stressed when you’re waiting for a train with a cold drink in your hand and some music in the air.
Whether you’re heading to a match or just passing through, we hope to make your ride more memorable. So, plan ahead and let's make the trip to and from the game an experience in and of itself.
