Four-month closure of westbound SR 520 on-ramp from Redmond Way/SR 202 starting April 15

*updated 3/25/2022

Beginning on April 15, 2022, crews will be closing the on-ramp to westbound State Route 520 from Redmond Way for 4 months in order to build a new freeway on-ramp. This work is happening so that crews can raise the westbound SR 520 on-ramp over the future light rail line that will travel at ground level, underneath the on-ramp.

In June of 2021, Sound Transit's contractor crews closed the eastbound SR 520 off-ramp to Redmond Way and shifted traffic to a temporary off-ramp in order to build the new off-ramp. Next, crews need to build the new westbound SR 520 on-ramp. Unlike the eastbound SR 520 off-ramp, crews do not have enough room to have both a temporary on-ramp and build the new on-ramp at the same time. So, project staff determined that the most viable way to perform this work is to close the westbound on-ramp for approximately four months.

This on-ramp closure is a big deal! Below are some ways you can plan and change how you move in anticipation of the closure. If you have any questions or concerns about this work, please reach out via my contact information below.

SR 520 overpass construction activities in Redmond

Sound Transit contractor crews will be working for an extended period of time on three SR 520 overpasses in Redmond: Northeast 40th Street (through January 2022), Northeast 51st Street (through January 2022), and Northeast 60th Street (through June 2022). Construction for the future Downtown Redmond Link Extension includes cut-and-cover tunnels beneath the overpasses. To build these sections, construction activities are done in phases to safely accommodate crews, public, and keep traffic moving. To stay up to date with the traffic changes we encourage the community to sign-up for our construction alerts and project updates. In addition, the City of Redmond regularly shares information about the project, you can sign up here.
