Bringing your bike or scooter

Everything you need to know about riding your bike or scooter and connecting with Sound Transit.
Sounder riders walk their bicycles to the street at King Street Station.

Riding a bicycle, scooter, or similar device is a great way to connect to Sound Transit trains and buses. Passengers are welcome to bring bikes and scooters on our vehicles at no extra cost, so long as posted rules are followed.

However, trains and buses have limited space, especially at peak times. Have a backup plan or try parking your bike in secure, on-demand lockers and bike rooms available at stations using the BikeLink app. Access cards and real-time locker availability information are available at bikelink.org.

For inquiries or feedback about bringing your bike or scooter, contact bicycles@soundtransit.org.

  • Single-seat, two-wheeled, non-fueled bicycles (both pedal- and electric-powered) are allowed on all Sound Transit vehicles. Tandem, fuel-powered (including motorbikes and mopeds), three-wheeled, or recumbent bicycles, or those with training wheels, attachments, trailers, or sharp projections are prohibited.
  • Bicycle storage on Sound Transit vehicles is available free of charge on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Cyclists with bicycles are not allowed to board any railcar exceeding agency-defined crowding thresholds. Sound Transit personnel have the right to refuse bicycle boardings in the event of overcrowding.
  • Folding bicycles with wheels 20” or smaller are allowed within the passenger area of any Sound Transit vehicle if they always remain in a folded configuration, are stowed with the passenger, and do not create an obstruction hazard.
  • Cyclists may load or unload their bicycles from any Sound Transit vehicle at any regular stop or station.
  • Bicycle kickstands must always remain up.
  • Passengers on trains must remain near their bicycles and move them out of the way if they create an obstruction hazard or upon request of Sound Transit personnel. Passengers standing with their bicycles need to maintain physical control of them.
  • Senior citizens and passengers with disabilities or limited mobility are to be given priority to board, deboard, and access priority seating and wheelchair areas on Sound Transit vehicles. Sound Transit personnel are authorized to ask passengers with bicycles to relocate or exit the train if their bicycles interfere with the needs of these passengers.
  • Personal bicycles and similarly sized devices may not be operated near station entrances, in fare paid zones, on station platforms, along/within rail alignments, or within transit vehicles.
  • Bringing bicycles on escalators is prohibited. Passengers must access grade-separated station platforms via stairs or elevators.
  • Sound Transit is not responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged bicycles or scooters.
  • Sound Transit is not responsible for injuries or damage to personal property associated with the presence of personal bicycles or other devices at Sound Transit facilities and onboard vehicles.
  • Charging of any electric bicycle is prohibited on transit vehicles.
  • Battery-powered electric bicycles are allowed with the same size restrictions as pedal-powered bicycles but are subject to safety inspection by Sound Transit personnel.
  • Batteries must be certified by UL Solutions (standards organization) to ensure fire safety.
  • Electric vehicles must always be powered off while onboard.
  • If electric mobility devices cannot be properly stored, then they must be stored like bicycles and count towards the bicycle limits per vehicle.
  • Damaged batteries are prohibited on transit vehicles.
  • Scooters and other devices can be accommodated if they adhere to the same size restrictions as bicycles, remain with their owner, do not create an obstruction hazard, and remain folded and stored completely under passenger seats with no protrusions.
