Project updates

Like many agencies nationwide that are balancing transit operations and mega-project capital expansions, Sound Transit faces rapidly escalating costs in nearly every area of its work.

The “Enterprise Initiative” is Sound Transit’s comprehensive effort aimed at delivering the maximum benefits of ST3 within available financial resources. As part of this effort, the Sound Transit Board is evaluating different approaches to updating the ST3 System Plan in summer 2026, which may include new ways to build, phase, or sequence projects.

Future Improvements

Sounder trains give Snohomish County residents a dependable, congestion-free commute to and from Seattle. Approved by voters in 2016, this project will make it easier to access the Edmonds and Mukilteo stations through improvements such as: additional parking; better walking, biking and local transit connections; and convenient pickup and drop-off areas.

In 2019, Sound Transit identified and evaluated more than 50 potential improvements to make it easier to get to Edmonds and Mukilteo Sounder stations. These may include additional parking; better walking, biking and transit connections; and convenient pickup and drop-off areas. Twenty-five of these potential improvements are recommended for further study. To learn more about the potential improvements, read the final reports below:

Based on direction from the Sound Transit Board of Directors through the realignment process completed on August 5, 2021, this project is expected to be complete by 2034.
