Extended work hours at Northgate Station

Starting as early as Monday, June 18th, Sound Transit’s contractor will be extending work hours at the Northgate Station site in order to decommission a dewatering well and remove structural support used during earlier construction of the new parking garage (see map). This work is expected to take about 3 weeks. 


Access to homes, businesses, Northgate Mall and Northgate Transit Center will be maintained. 

What to expect
Monday, June 18th – early July 

  • Work Activities: Decommissioning a dewatering well and removing structural support within future Sound Transit parking garage.
  • Work Hours: 24 hours a day.  
  • Traffic Impacts: None, all work to be done on-site.
  • Construction equipment: excavators, compaction rollers, hot saws, and light plants.

Weekend work and road closures NE 103rd Street and Northbound 1st Avenue NE

Starting as early as Friday, June 15, Sound Transit’s contractor will be conducting work for sewer system and manhole installation along NE 103rd Street between 1st and 3rd avenue NE, as well as along 1st Avenue NE between NE 100th and NE 105th street (see map). 
Access to homes, businesses, Northgate Mall, Northgate Transit Center and the Hampton Inn and Suites will be maintained. 
What to expect: 
9:00 p.m. Friday, June 15 – 4:00 a.m. Monday, June 18

  • Work Hours: 24 hours a day
  • Traffic Impacts (see map): 
    • NE 103rd street will be closed to through traffic between 1st and 3rd avenue NE.  
    • 1st Avenue NE northbound will be closed to through traffic between NE 100th and NE 105th street.
    • Intersection at NE 103rd Street and 1st Avenue NE will remain open. Traffic exiting the I-5 express lanes will have to go southbound onto 1st Avenue NE toward NE 100th street. 
    • Intersection at NE 100th Street and 1st Avenue NE will remain open. Northbound traffic will have to go eastbound onto NE 100th Street toward 3rd Avenue NE. 
  • Construction Activities: Installing a sewer system tie in along NE 103rd Street, for the Sound Transit Northgate Mall parking garage, connecting to the manhole installation on 1st Avenue NE. Asphalt paving will follow installation.
  • Equipment: Excavators, light plants, cut off saws, front end loaders, dump trucks, trench boxes, asphalt rollers and paving machine.

The Northgate Link Extension will connect the Northgate, Roosevelt and U District neighborhoods to downtown Seattle and Sea-Tac Airport. Fast, reliable service will provide relief to one of the region's most congested traffic areas. The 4.3-mile extension is expected to be open for service in 2021.

Roosevelt Station – Shift Change

The week of June 11th Sound Transit contractors will stagger the work hours of the construction crews who are working in the same area of the below grade structure. The crews will begin work at 5 AM and work until 11 PM. Most work performed outside of regular construction work hours will be performed below surface to reduce the impact to neighbors. The contractor has obtained a TNV for this work.

What to expect:

  • Traffic impacts: Continuing closure of the westernmost curb lane of 12th Avenue NE between NE 65th Street and NE 68th Street, as needed.
  • Construction activities: Contractor will be using an electric mortar mixer above grade. All crane work will be performed within the normal work hours.  Laborers will be disassembling shoring towers within the station box.
  • Equipment: Crane, electric mortar mixer, concrete blankets.
  • Work hours: 5 a.m. to 11 p.m., Monday – Friday
  • Duration: June 11 – June 25

University District Neighborhood Construction Update

Major Changes to the U District Station site from June 2018 – July 2019
As early as Friday June, 8, you will begin to see the first of several changes around the U District Station site. The contractor is preparing to install the underground roof of the building under NE 43rd Street and finish the station. Below are the initial changes that will take place to accommodate these activities:


What to expect:

  • The temporary bridge that was constructed on NE 43rd Street (in front of the University Manor Apartments) has to be removed to allow the contractor to finish construction of the station. This part of NE 43rd Street will be closed to vehicular traffic until July 2019. (see map). A security barrior will be installed along the curb to allow pedestrians to walk on the sidewalk.
  • A new load/unload zone will be added along the east side of Brooklyn Ave NE (see map).
  • The pedestrian pathway around the U District construction site will remain open during the week.  (7am – 6pm).
  • Work Hours: 7:00 am – 3:00 pm Monday – Friday for the removal of the sound wall and temporary bridge.
  • Work Activities: Sawcutting, jack hammering, removal of sound wall.

Nighttime closure of NE 100th street between 1st Avenue NE and Northgate Transit Center – April 26-28

Nighttime closure of NE 100th street between 1st Avenue NE and Northgate Transit Center – April 26-28
Starting on Thursday night, April 26, and ending on Saturday morning, April 28, NE 100th Street will be closed overnight between 1st Avenue NE and the Northgate Transit Center (see map) in order for Sound Transit’s contractor to conduct overhead work along the elevated guideway at 100th Street. 
Access to Northgate Transit Center and Northgate Mall will be maintained. 


What to expect: 
Thursday, April 26 – Saturday, April 28 (two nights)
7:00 p.m. – 5:00 a.m.

  • Traffic Impacts: Closure of NE 100th Street east of the 1st Avenue NE intersection to the west of the Northgate Transit Center access road (see map). 1st Avenue NE will remain open in both directions. 
  • Construction equipment: Light plants, forklifts, man lifts.

Track Slab Delivery at U District Station site

Track Slab Delivery at U District Station site
As early as the night of Monday, April 30 Sound Transit’s contractor will begin track slab deliveries for the Northgate Link tunnels at the U District Station site. The trucks will enter the south gate and exit through the north gate (see map). This work is scheduled to occur during the following timeframes:

  • Monday, April 30 – Sunday, September 30
  • Work Hours: 7:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. Monday – Sunday. Contractor has obtained an extension to the Major Public Project Construction Noise Variance from the City of Seattle to do this work. 

What to Expect:


Traffic Impacts:

  • The South gate: Trucks will enter on Brooklyn Ave NE near NE 43rd Street. Once the trucks have been emptied they will leave the site through the north gate and proceed to NE 50th Street before entering the freeway (see map). Delivery trucks will be staged on site near the south gate.
  • Sidewalks: All sidewalks will remain open. 
  • Work Activities: Increased vehicle traffic (6 to 7 trucks) every night. Please expect additional nighttime noise.

Additional nighttime closures at NE 103rd street

There will be additional nighttime closures at NE 103rd street. See information below:

  • On Friday, April 6, through Saturday morning, April 7. 
  • On Friday, April 13, through Saturday morning, April 14.

These closures are in addition to the closures of 1st Ave NE (see map).

This is to allow Sound Transit’s contractor to complete work related to the Northgate Link Station. 


Access to Northgate Transit Center and Northgate Mall will be maintained. I-5 express lanes will remain open. 
What to expect: 
Friday, April 6 – Saturday, April 7
and 
Friday, April 13 – Saturday, April 14
Work Hours:
8:00 p.m. – 5:00 a.m. 


Traffic Impacts: 

  • Closure of NE 103rd Street east of the 1st Avenue NE intersection to the west of the Northgate Transit Center access road (see map).

Construction activities: Removal of the falsework which has been used to support the guideway during construction. 
Construction equipment: Manlifts, light plants, forklifts, cranes, flatbed trucks. 
Sound Transit’s Contractor has received a temporary noise variance permit for this work.

Roosevelt Station - Early morning concrete pour

The week of April 9th Sound Transit's contractor will conduct a large concrete pour requiring work to begin at 4 a.m. at the Roosevelt Station site. A temporary noise variance permit has been obtained from the City of Seattle for this work. The concrete pour is expected to take one day.

What to expect:

  • Traffic impacts: None, all work done on-site.
  • Construction activities: Setting up the concrete pump, trucks entering and exiting the site, tower crane moving equipment. The contractor will install sound barriers around the concrete operation to help keep noise to a minimum.
  • Equipment: Concrete pump truck, concrete trucks, tower crane.
  • Permitted start times: Setup as early as 4 a.m., pour as early as 5 a.m.

*Work is weather dependent. Notices will be resent for any schedule changes.

Extended weekend work hours and closure of 1st Ave NE April 6 – 9 and 13 – 16

Starting as early as Friday, April 6, Sound Transit's contractor will be conducting work to install a stormwater drainage system along 1st Avenue Northeast between Northeast 107th and Northeast 103rd Street (see map).

Access to homes, businesses, Northgate Mall, Northgate Transit Center and the Hampton Inn and Suites will be maintained.

What to expect:

8 p.m. Friday, April 6 – 4:30 a.m. Monday, April 9 and 8 p.m. Friday, April 13 – 4:30 a.m. Monday, April 16
  • Work hours: 24 hours a day
  • Traffic impacts (see map):
    • 1st Avenue Northeast will be closed to through traffic between Northeast 107th and Northeast 103rd streets.
    • Intersection at Northeast 107th Street and 1st Avenue Northeast will remain open. Traffic exiting the I-5 will have to go eastbound onto 107th Street toward Northgate Mall or northbound onto 1st Avenue Northeast toward Northeast Northgate Way.
    • Intersection at Northeast 103rd Street and 1st Avenue Northeast will remain open. Traffic exiting the I-5 express lanes will have to go eastbound onto 103rd Street toward 5th Avenue Northeast or southbound onto 1st Avenue Northeast toward Northeast 100th Street.
  • Construction activities: Installing an FC-5 stormwater system consisting of two 36-inch pipes connected to manholes located at Northeast 103rd Street and 1st Avenue Northeast and manholes located at Northeast 105th Street and 1st Avenue Northeast. Asphalt paving will follow installation.
  • Equipment: Excavators, light plants, cut off saws, front end loaders, dump trucks, trench boxes, asphalt rollers and paving machine.

Rail delivery at Maple Leaf Portal

As early as the afternoon of Monday, April 2, Sound Transit's contractor will finish the rail deliveries for the Northgate Link tunnels at the Maple Leaf Portal (MLP). All delivery trucks will stage in the closed southbound lane (see map). This work is scheduled to occur during the following timeframes:

  • Monday, April 2 – Wednesday, April 4
  • Work hours: 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Traffic impacts:

  • Southbound lane closure: The southbound lane of 1st Avenue Northeast will be closed during these work hours. Flaggers will control alternating one-way traffic along 1st Avenue Northeast.
  • No parking signs: Will be placed along 1st Avenue Northeast.
  • Sidewalk closures: All sidewalks will remain open.
  • Work activities: 80-foot long sections of rail will be picked off delivery trucks and staged at the MLP site.
