System expansion

With voter approval in 1996, 2008 and 2016, Sound Transit is undertaking an ambitious expansion of the regional mass transit system. Every few years new light rail, bus rapid transit and commuter rail stations will open throughout the region. When complete:

  • Link light rail system expands to 116 miles, more than five times its current length.
  • Bus rapid transit serves major highways north, east and south of Lake Washington.
  • Sounder south line passenger capacity and service increase and two new stations are added.
  • Tacoma Link extends in two phases to reach Tacoma Community College.
  • Access to stations improves with new parking spaces and miles of bike and pedestrian paths.
  • 793,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions are saved each year.
  • Transit-oriented development creates vibrant, walkable neighborhoods near stations.
  • Transfers are easy to local transit service, rideshare and other last-mile connections.
